The first missionaries to South Africa arrived in April 1853, and in August, the first congregation was organized four miles from Cape Town. Since that time the church has grown in strength and numbers.

The Church's Faith in Every Footstep site has a number of fact sheets covering the Church in various parts of the world, including South Africa.

On 20 November 1987 mission and area leaders presented Mangosuthu G. Buthelezi, Chief Minister Kwazulu, President of Inkatha and Chairman, The South African Black Alliance, with the Zulu translation of the Book of Mormon .
